The Peace That Comes Through Trust

Nouk Sanchez and Tomas Vieira are living proof of the power of A Course in Miracles to completely transform our lives. A teaching couple and international workshop leaders, Nouk and Tomas specialize in translating the wisdom of the Course into a practical path to enlightenment. We spoke to them about their new audio-learning program The Miracle of Trust, and what can happen when we surrender control of our lives to the will of the Divine.

Sounds True: What do you mean when you use the term "trust"?

Tomas Vieira: What we're talking about is transferring our trust from our limited concept of self - this person, all it's learned, and the importance we place in that - to the part of us that is connected to the Divine and to the eternal. This puts us in touch with a Source that knows infinitely more than we could ever possibly know in one short lifetime.

Within the context of the Course, we're talking about withdrawing trust from the illusion not only of ourselves but of this world, and placing it in the everlasting, in the non-changing, in the all-knowing part of ourselves.

Some people might say, "Well, isn't it naïve to remove a trust that's been built on knowledge gathered over a lifetime, with access to information through history and books?" Yes, but here we're talking about withdrawing trust in anything outside or based on the past - because that's all it is, past information. This is about placing trust in what we call "the Teacher within" who knows right now.

So it's actually a more secure base of operation because of two things: one, you're placing trust within; and two, you're placing it with the Divine.

ST: "Ego" is the term often used to describe the more familiar base of operation. What does the transfer of trust reveal about the ego?

Nouk Sanchez: What we learn is that we are not the ego. Before we start the journey of awakening, we believe that we are the ego - or the "I," the self that is separate from everyone and everything, including God. As we undo that belief, we realize that we have a choice: we can choose either the inner Teacher or the ego's voice. We can make this choice in every minute, day by day, until ultimately we no longer choose to listen to ego. There's no obliteration of the ego, as some people might think; there's just a gentle falling away of ego when we no longer choose it.

ST: How do we tell the difference between the voice of the ego and the inner Teacher?

TV: It's actually very easy. When we listen to the voice of the ego, there will be an increase in fear; listen to what the Teacher within has to say and trust that, and you experience the contrast: a strange sense of peace. This is not to say that when you consult the Teacher within, there won't be some discomfort at first. Because, after all, it is for most people a new pathway. But watch for that sense of peace; that's when you know you're on the right track.

ST: Is this experience related to what the Course calls "the holy instant"?

NS: A Course in Miracles is founded upon the principle that we've never left the perfect oneness of love. We've forgotten this in the perceptional paradigm we call "the world" and "my life." There is nothing apart from God's absolute love, except in a dream of false beliefs. The holy instant is when we remember in the here and now that the only thing that matters is love. It's when the inner Teacher helps to shift our perception in a miraculous way. And we're entitled to these miracles every day and in every minute of our lives.

ST: So even if the ego says that you don't know what the hell you're doing, if you experience peace by following the inner Teacher, you're on the right path?

TV: Yes, and that peace includes the understanding that there is absolutely no need to attack or defend. We can hand all of that energy over to Spirit. What a relief! It's all about discovering that the water is warm, jump in! It's safe. Trust your Self.

Waking from the Dream

I woke in the night with a realization of self distrust and saw it as self-judgment for the first time. I never saw myself as being a self judging person but now I see that unworthiness isn't just a feeling, it's also a total self judgment. I saw then that I was keeping all these memories of anger, cheating, lying, private thoughts etc. I saw that keeping them was making them real and judging myself for it. I saw how this was not allowing Holy Spirit to take them and clean and erase them and that these memories were
a) not even seen by God,
b) were not real,
c) were not committed by ME,
d) that holding them meant I was playing God and condemning myself.

I apologized to God for holding them as real against myself, for judging them and then I asked Holy Spirit to take them from me and show me instead the truth of what I am.

The Story of Chay - A Case Study in Healing

An Excerpt from
"THE GOD THAT WE’VE CREATED ...
THE BASIC CAUSE OF ALL DISEASE"

Chay was four years old when he began to experience excruciating headaches. At first, the family doctors prescribed medication for childhood migraines, but his condition only worsened. Their tests soon determined that he suffered from a tumor located in his brain stem. Chay was admitted to surgery, which removed 98 percent of the cancer, but the boy's vision was severely impaired and he was left unable to walk. 18 months of chemotherapy followed.

Despite these procedures, later exams revealed that the tumor had regrown to the size of a lemon and spread to Chay’s spine. By this time, he had dark circles under his eyes and his immune system was debilitated.

After being told that further treatment would only buy Chay more time as his cancer continued to spread, the child’s mother decided to see Michele O’Donnell. What sets her apart from traditional Western medical practitioners is her firm belief in the unlimited individual potential for healing. Over the course of decades, her message has empowered patients to be set free from breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, asthma, lung cancer, lupus and other diseases. Today Chay is a cancer-free, high school athlete with perfect vision and hearing.

At the same time another mother brought her son with the exact same diagnosis, but she never for an instant believed that God had anything to do with this experience. Instead of spending time trying to figure out why this happened, she held to the thought that he was made in the image and likeness of God, and that God "made him to be strong and healthy, to grow into a strong and healthy and happy man."

She was clear that God was Love. Not a God who loved, but Love Itself. It was always a forgone conclusion in her mind that this experience was as unacceptable to the nature of God as it was to her. She never looked for a cause, but denied it on the basis that it was totally illegitimate, having never been sent from God.

She told her son that he was made by God to be whole and complete, strong and healthy. She repeated it almost hourly, day after day. They soon discovered that the tumors were gone and they also never reappeared. That was over eight years ago.

An Internal Conversation with Holy Spirit

Why am I here? Where are you? I don't know. Yes, you do. I am confused. No, you are not. I am angry. That is why you are here. I don't want to be angry anymore. Stop being angry. I don't know how to stop being angry. Is it true? No, I don't wish to stop being angry. Why? It fuels my life, without anger I think I would die. Without anger your ego would most certainly die.How can the infinite, eternal die? I am afraid it doesn't exist. That fear is why you are here. I resist this point. What if this is all there is?? Who are you talking to then? I could be talking to my crazy split self making it all up (isn't that funny)!

This is an absolute truth... the infinite must be either true or false, there is no other choice.
1.) The infinite is the truth in which case my crazy split self has made this world up and I am talking to my real self.
2.) The infinite is false in which case my crazy split self has made the infinite up. This world is all there is and there is no guiding force. There is no connectedness. We are all totally separate. I will die and never have consciousness again, never wake up again. What am I seeking then if no higher purpose exists? Why would I waste my only existence searching for something else? What do I believe is missing? If there is no higher power I am powerless, at the mercy of circumstances not under my control, no ability to change things, will physically die BUT I am no different than anyone else. I am just as worthy as every other person on this world. Whichever tack I take brings me to the same conclusion; I am worthy. If I separated- I am not guilty. If I didn't separate - how can I be guilty? Guilty of what? If I am God I can be nothing but love. If I am not God what else would I want to be except love. Both paths lead to the same place. One path is a path of peace, one a path of fear. If I am going to the same place my only choice is which path to use. Why would I choose to walk in fear when I can walk in peace??
3.) Could there be a third choice where the infinite, eternal is more powerful than I and not love? If not love than it has to be fear. A universe run by fear would have no purpose in allowing expressions of love, contrary to its existence and purpose. What if it allows expressions of love to allow fear to deepen, new lows, more chaos. There is a point in all insanity where sanity emerges. What if it is a balance, a pendulum that switches between, oscillates from fear to love, creating an ever changing existence. That situation begs to ask who controls the pendulum? If there is expansion/contraction of love, then again, which part do I choose to align with?

Always it comes down to do I choose love or fear; no matter what is/is not in me, outside me, above me, below me. Every scenario I can imagine and every scenario I cannot imagine boils down to the same essence... Do I want to choose love or fear? Which brings the most peace? Duh!!

I am willing to surrender. I am willing to surrender. Stop trying so hard. I don't know any other way. I am the other way, soft and gentle, a whisper in the night, a breeze in the day, the sun on your skin in early morning. How do I get there? You never left my child, integral part of me, forever loved and love. Where did you think you could go? Where am I? Where you have always been, with me. Why don't I feel that? You keep trying to be apart from me... I am not mad, I could never be mad, mad does not exist, you are dreaming. It feels real. Of course it feels real, you are trying to make it real. Holy Spirit, take me home. You are there my child. I am confused. I am not. I wish to be you. You already know you are.
